A Message From Pastor Cynthia …

Ash Wednesday: February 17th
Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent - a forty day period before Easter, when we remember Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness. Lent is a time of reflection, repentence, sacrifice and prayer. We will begin our Lenten journey with the sign of ashes - a sign of the fraility and uncertainty of life. Ashes are also a symbol of penitence. The ashes help us remember our need for repentence, and of God's mercy, forgiveness, and love that are proclaimed by Jesus. Please join us on Ash Wednesday, February 17th, in the social hall for a simple meal of soup and bread at 6:00 p.m. Please RSVP to the church office so that we will be able to better plan for the meal. The solemn service of ashes and communion will follow.

Our Book of Common Worship’s Ash Wednesday service begins with these words: "Friends in Christ, every year before the Christian Passover we celebrate our redemption through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lent is a time to prepare for this celebration and to renew our life in the paschal mystery. We begin our journey to Easter with the sign of ashes. This ancient sign speaks of the frailty and uncertainty of human life, and marks the penitence of this community. We thus begin this holy season by acknowledging our need for repentance, and for the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. You are invited to observe a holy Lent by self-examination and penitence, by prayer and fasting, by works of love, and by reading and meditating on the Word of God."

Blessings and peace, Pastor Cynthia

A Different Kind of Lenten Devotion … Are you looking for something different for your devotional time during Lent? I would like to recommend that you check out this website http://www.d365.org/todaysdevotion/. d365.org, a daily online devotional series, was created and is produced by Passport, Inc. Passport is a student ministry organization focused on creating meaningful experiences and resources for students. The site was designed to appeal to students, but I think it will appeal to all ages. Each day, visitors to the d365 site are given an opportunity to center themselves, to reflect on scripture, to read a meditation, and to pray. There is music for each day as well. You can add the d365 site to your favorites or have a daily reminder sent to your email.

Dear Congregation,

How deeply touched and moved I am, with your loving embrace during our time of incredible need. Skip, Larisa and I want to express our appreciation for ALL that you have done for us: the prayers, the cards, the phone calls, the prayer shawl, the visits, and outpouring of true love has made this bearable. It truly is a miraculous divine intervention that Skip is where he is today. We ask for continued prayer as the healing process continues.

Love, Leonard, Joan and Larisa

DID YOU KNOW” … (Stewardship Committee)

Per Capita

What is Per Capita anyway?

Perhaps we should begin with what Per Capita isn’t. It is not your personal payment to PCUSA. Nor, is it your Church dues. The Church does not require these of any member. You may be assured that if you find that you cannot contribute any funds to the Church, you are still welcome as a member. That is one area that the Church differs from secular organizations. God welcomes you regardless of your circumstances.

Per Capita means per head and is merely a factor by which the “greater” Church determines the proportion that each of the 51 local Churches in our Presbytery is expected to contribute toward the expenses of Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. (They could, just as well, use square footage of property, or some other criteria). Per Capita is, of course, more equitable. We will address the percentages to each entity further on.

As further explanation, Per Capita as used in our case was designated as $31.14 for 2009. This was a total apportionment of $4,671.00 for Waverly Presbyterian Church for that year. This figure was calculated and based on the number of active members on 12/31/08. (Please note, we do not have to contribute for members who are inactive.) We reported that we had 150 active members at that time. In 2010 our apportionment will be $4,791.00, which is based on a Per Capita amount of $31.73 and membership of 151 that was reported on 12/31/08.

So how is Per Capita apportioned and used beyond the local Church?

The Per Capita is split into three funds. 68% goes to Presbytery, 12% to Synod, and 20% to General Assembly. The Presbytery’s portion is used to cover the salaries and expenses of their staff . It also covers the expenses of running the Presbytery’s Mission Center. It helps provide leadership training events, a newsletter, mission interpretation, and much, much more! In truth, Per Capita money keeps our Presbytery running smoothly! The portions of these funds that go to Synod and General Assembly are used for similar expenses and programs at those levels of the “greater” Church.

So why do we suggest that you may want to contribute this extra amount?

Frankly, if the Church was not facing a $24,000 deficit, we probably wouldn’t be. We, the Stewardship Committee, are obligated to search for ways to enhance the flow of income necessary to keep the Church solvent. It is our thought that some members might get personal satisfaction from contributing this portion that represents their membership in PCUSA. (42 of our members did this last year.) On the other hand, this amounts to sharing part of the load of that portion of our Church’s finances that we are obligated to send to Presbytery anyway.

Still have questions?

If you have any questions about Per Capita, please speak with Barbara Tweedt, Chair of Finance, Jim Collins, Chair of Stewardship, Jim Kinney, our Treasurer and/or Dale Barber, our Presbytery Commissioner. Thanks!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT WAVERLY PRES …

Computers…those of you who have them know the mixed blessing that they are. I just spent two hours on the phone with Riki in the Philippines. The virus had infected my computer so severely that it wasn’t operational. Layers and layers of pop-up-boxes covered my computer screen and reproduced faster than I could delete them. I had tried everything within my power to get rid of the nasty intruders to no avail. I called for help …. enter Riki, from Microsoft Tech Support. I clicked a button to turn over control of my computer screen to Riki. From the other side of the world, Riki glided around on my computer screen, opening boxes, revealing and deleting the alien virus pieces that only he could recognize. How like our God is that! If we but click the button and put ourselves in his hands, we find out just how capable God is to search our inmost being, to root out the things that don’t belong there and are messing us up, and to give us a life far cleaner and freer than a sky blue Windows computer screen. God in our inmost being, bailing us out, cleaning us up, setting us free to live and move. So that all may know that joy, the Christian Ed team offers opportunities for all ages.

Would you like to use your unique personality, gifts, and abilities to serve Christ by serving others? Are you willing to step outside of your comfort zone and community to stretch your horizons and your faith? The Mission Committee of Waverly Pres met on January 26th and is excited to offer you these opportunities to serve.

SUMMER 2010: Service to the homeless of the city: An experience helping others that you will never forget. For Parents (or “guardian”) and their children AGE 14 and up; 18 and under need a parent or “guardian” adult. The trip will be three to four days in late June or early July, date to be determined.

SUMMER 2011: Service to provide Living Water to those in desperate situations. “Living Waters For The World” provides water purification systems for those who live where there is no water fit to drink, in the name of the One who gives “living water”. How does it work?

  • A team from our church would be trained in assembling and installing the water system and in teaching children and adults how to use clean water properly;

  • Our church is then partnered with a church in the area where water is needed;

  • Team travels to work with the local people to install the water system;

  • Possible locations are Appalachia, USA, and the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Please email Stephanie at w.pres.ce@gmail.com if you are interested in either of these opportunities, or call 607-734-0428, or the church office at 607-565-4034.

Sign-up sheet in the Social Hall. E-mail Stephanie at w.pres.ce@gmail.com; or call the church office at 565-4034 to volunteer to help. Thank you. The sale is an all church effort to raise funds to meet our faith budget.

We would also need to consider lunch for the workers, there would be a sign-up sheet to bring something for the lunch on Saturday, a “pot-luck lunch.” Feedback is welcomed.
